Palm Bay censures defiant councilman over controversial posts; lawsuit expected

Chandler Langevin vows to sue the city

PALM BAY, Fla. – The Palm Bay City Council on Thursday censured one of its members over controversial social media posts about Indians that have roiled the city, despite threats by the councilman to sue the city.

Councilman Chandler Langevin came under fire after his recent posts on the social media site X.com, saying, “There’s not a single Indian that cares about the United States. They are here to exploit us financially and enrich India and Indians. America for Americans.”

The mayor and other members of the city council made conciliatory statements to residents.

However, Langevin stood by his words, though he eventually issued a statement apologizing for his tone.

Two weeks ago, the council voted to ask Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to remove Langevin from his position.

On Thursday night, after public comment and debate, the council voted 3-2 to censure Langevin.

“If you were to say something like this in active duty, you’d be standing on the carpet. This is our way of standing on the carpet,” Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina said.

The censure means Langevin will not be able to add items to agendas, and he can be barred from other boards or committees in the city.

“I am either an elected councilman or I am not,” Langevin said to the council Thursday night. “As soon as we allow councils to start silencing members... we set a dangerous precedent for any majority to silence any minority.”

Langevin has promised to sue over the decision, calling the censure illegal.

Attorney Anthony Sabatini, a Lake County commissioner, also posted on X that a lawsuit against the city of Palm Bay will be filed on Friday.
