NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – A New Smyrna Beach golf course was vandalized over the weekend, resulting in over $160,000 in damage, according to the police department.
Officers were called early Sunday after general manager Ben Herring arrived to find deep tire ruts and torn turf across the second green. Investigators say about 7,000 square feet was damaged and could take weeks to fully restore.
Herring said crews began working immediately.
“There was significant damage, but we have such an amazing maintenance crew,” Herring said. “Almost immediately we got to work, and it looks like we’re going to come off this thing better than we ever have.”
A witness reported seeing a truck doing donuts on the course around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, but could not identify the vehicle in the dark. Herring said a nearby homeowner later shared security video showing the truck on the green.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage and asking residents with cameras facing the course to check for anything recorded overnight and email tips or video to PDTIPS@cityofnsb.com.
Despite the cost and disruption, the club says golf operations continue as normal.
“This place is in the best shape it’s ever been,” Herring said. “That golf experience will not be tainted by one person’s actions. Come out and join us.”
No arrests have been made.
Police say once a suspect is identified, felony criminal mischief charges are expected based on the cost of the damage.
