Bomb squad responds after mortar found in Belle Isle backyard; device rendered safe

BELLE ISLE, Fla. – The discovery of a possible mortar found in a Belle Isle backyard had explosive experts from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on scene investigating the device on Monday.

Belle Isle police said “what appears to be a mortar” was located in the backyard of a home off Waltham Avenue around 10:45 a.m.

“The Orange County Sheriff’s Office Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team is currently on scene examining the item,” police said in the release.

Police also said that students at nearby Cornerstone Charter Academy were relocated inside the school, but there is no immediate threat to residents or students.

The school was temporarily placed on “soft lockdown, shelter in place” out of an abundance of caution, but school officials later said that all roads around the campus have been reopened.

Deputies later said that their bomb unit took control of the mortar, and it was taken to an OCSO facility where it was “rendered safe.”
