The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook that there was a “large law enforcement presence in the area of Beach Village Circle in Palm Coast due to an active investigation.”

According to a news release, a caller reported “two people sustained gunshot wounds during the incident” with one person still inside the apartment while the other person was at a nearby convenience store.

The first deputy on scene went to the convenience store, where Flagler Beach police officers found 22-year-old Tyree Smith. Smith had gunshot wounds to his upper body and arm. Deputies and officers provided medical aid until emergency medical services arrived. Smith was treated and transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach with non-life-threatening injuries.

At the apartment, deputies found a juvenile male with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was treated on scene and then taken to Halifax Health for further treatment before being released.

The sheriff’s office said they established crime scenes at both the apartment and convenience store.

Inside the apartment, deputies found a handgun in the hallway along with spent shell casings and bullet impacts.

According to the release, detectives interviewed a woman involved, who said the disturbance began as a verbal argument with Smith. She said the argument escalated to a physical fight during which she was struck and fell, hitting her head. She then screamed for help.

The woman said a juvenile family member entered with a firearm and told Smith to stop. Smith allegedly became aggressive toward the juvenile, who fired a shot that struck Smith. A struggle over the gun followed in the hallway, during which another shot was fired, hitting the juvenile in the leg. Smith fled and was found at the convenience store.

“Our Major Case Unit is still actively working to confirm the details of exactly what occurred,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Thankfully, no one suffered life-threatening injuries, and no innocent persons were injured during this incident. Both persons involved are making stand-your-ground claims and both do not appear to be completely truthful or cooperative.”

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
