Shots fired at Deltona home after attempted break-in, deputies say

Shooting happened early Wednesday morning, investigators say

DELTONA, Fla. – Deputies are searching for a group of suspects after an attempted home invasion led to gunfire early Wednesday morning in a Deltona neighborhood, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators say the incident happened just after 4 a.m. at a home on Wainwright Street.

A doorbell camera recorded four suspects trying to force their way inside. When they were unable to get in, deputies say the group opened fire at the house before driving away. No injuries were reported.

Neighbors described waking up to the sound of gunshots.

“It was like bang-bang-bang, like that,” one neighbor said, recalling the noise that jolted her awake.

She said that she heard shots around 4:07 a.m. and immediately worried about her family.

Deputies say the suspects’ vehicle was later spotted on I-4, leading to a pursuit. Authorities say deputies eventually lost sight of the vehicle.

Cresinda Jones, who moved into her home down the street last month, said she watched in fear as crime scene tape and patrol cars surrounded the area.

“I’m thankful that no one was harmed. I have a 19-month-old here, and stray bullets don’t know anyone,” she said. “That’s very dangerous. It could happen to me.”

Detectives have not said how many shots were fired or whether the house was specifically targeted.

The investigation is ongoing.
