‘Dogs are family:’ Video shows Sanford police rescue husky from burning home

Police respond to scene on Appaloosa Court

SANFORD, Fla. – New video from the Sanford Police Department shows first responders save a family dog from a house fire.

All adults and children had been safely evacuated from the burning home early Tuesday on Appaloosa Court, but Sanford police learned upon reaching the scene that the family dog, a husky, was still inside, according to the post.

Body-worn camera footage shared to Facebook shows officers Pagan and Diaz entering the home and carrying the dog out to the sidewalk. Though the video is largely blurred, police said the husky appeared lifeless in its cage.

Pagan cared for the dog for about 30 minutes — cooling, hydrating and providing oxygen to the pet — before it could be seen raising its head and giving the family a moment of relief, the video shows.

“As Officer Pagan said, ‘Dogs are family,’ and we couldn’t agree more. Thank you, Officer Pagan, for saving this beloved family member!” the post states, also commending Sanford and Seminole County firefighters for their work at the scene.

One person suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, according to the Sanford Fire Department.
