POLK COUNTY, Fla. – An SUV driver suffered critical injuries late Saturday upon striking a Winter Haven fire truck that was turning at an intersection, according to police.

The crash occurred around 10:24 p.m. at the intersection of Dundee Road and Overlook Drive, the Winter Haven Police Department said in a news release.

Winter Haven Fire Department Engine 4 and its crew of three firefighters were returning to their station after a call for service and attempting to make a left turn from Overlook onto Dundee with a green traffic signal when the SUV struck them, the release states.

The firefighters were unharmed, but the crash resulted in significant damage to the SUV and to its driver, who was trapped inside of the vehicle, police said.

The driver was airlifted to a local trauma center for treatment of critical injuries after firefighters got them out of the wreckage, according to the release.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the crash, police said, adding no further information would be shared at the time of this writing.
