According to an arrest affidavit, Bass was getting a ride home from the victim, who was driving while Bass sat in the back passenger seat directly behind.
Another passenger, who was seated in the front, said they heard a “loud pop” and “a bright flash” from the back seat. The driver fell out of the car onto the curb while Bass exited the vehicle and entered a home, the affidavit states.
The other passenger told police there was no one else in the area when the shooting happened.
The victim was taken to the hospital, where they were in stable condition. According to the affidavit, the victim was shot in the upper left part of the back and had a punctured lung.
Police tried to make contact with Bass, who had been inside the home for a couple of hours, before he surrendered and was taken into custody.
Bass faces a charge of attempted second-degree murder.
Online court records initially stated that Bass faced a charge of second-degree murder. At a bond hearing, however, prosecutors said the charge should be attempted murder.
Apopka police on Tuesday posted on Facebook that the shooting stemmed from a disagreement.
“Cornelious Bass was arrested after a disagreement escalated far beyond words, ending with him shooting a man in the back. Remember, violence is NEVER the answer! Actions like this have serious consequences, no matter the time of year,” the post stated.
