Woman dead, 2 others hospitalized after fire breaks out at Cocoa Beach home

Firefighters respond to Volusia Lane

COCOA BEACH, Fla. – A woman is dead and two others were hospitalized Friday morning after a fire broke out at a Cocoa Beach home, according to police.

Firefighters responded at 6 a.m. to the home on West Volusia Lane in Cocoa Beach.

Video obtained by News 6 showed smoke billowing out of the home.

Cocoa Beach Fire Department was assisted by Brevard County Fire Rescue and Cape Canaveral Fire Rescue.

“The scene has been secured; however, the immediate area remains inaccessible as investigators continue their work,” police said.

A neighbor told Cocoa Beach Community Correspondent James Sparvero the victims are two men and a woman who are in their 60s or 70s.

Julie A. Edwards, 68, died from her injuries. A 72-year-old man is in critical condition after being taken to a hospital out of the area for advanced medical treatment. A 69-year-old man is in the intensive care unit at a local hospital.

“It’s a sad day for these guys,” Greg Harlow said. “She was pretty much incapacitated.”

In terms of the response time, there’s a fire station on the same street.

“All the way down and back, it was solid with fire trucks and responders,” Harlow said. “They do a great job out here in Cocoa Beach supporting the community on fires and stuff like this.”

No other information has been released.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Rosa of the Cocoa Beach Police Department at 321-868-3248.
