LONGWOOD, Fla. – A person’s clothes caught on fire Thursday night in Longwood after he tried to start a fire in the woods for warmth, according to police.

Officers responded around 7:30 p.m. to the 800 block of W. Warren Avenue, where reports indicated the victim — who has so far only been described as a male — exited the wood line with burning clothes that were quickly put out by a good Samaritan, the Longwood Police Department said in a statement.

Officers and paramedics rendered aid to the victim while firefighters extinguished the flames in the woods, the statement reads.

The victim was then taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.

The investigation is being conducted jointly by the Longwood Police Department and State Fire Investigators. Video and physical evidence suggests the fire was originally contained within a small area in an effort for the male victim to seek warmth and quickly grew larger, which overcame the male victim.

The victim was in stable condition at last check, according to the statement.

An investigation is ongoing, police said. The fire did not affect any businesses or residential structures, nor did it interrupt any services, the statement reads.
