COCOA, Fla. – A crash in Cocoa left a woman dead and a driver hospitalized early Friday afternoon, according to the police department.

In a release, police said they received several calls about the incident at 12:55 p.m., reporting that a pickup truck had struck two pedestrians before crashing into a building near 300 Brevard Ave.

Upon arrival, first responders found a 25-year-old woman who was unresponsive on the ground, deputies added. She was taken to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Meanwhile, the man who was accompanying her refused medical treatment, though the truck driver — one 64-year-old man — was also taken to the hospital, investigators explained.

“Preliminary findings indicate the driver may have suffered an unknown medical episode, causing him to lose control of his vehicle, a 2016 white Dodge Ram 1500,” the release reads.

According to the department, witnesses reported that the truck had clipped the sidewalk, struck the pedestrians and ultimately crashed into the building at Brevard Avenue.

As such, Brevard Avenue has been closed between State Road 520 and Harrison Street as investigators continue to look into the crash.

Meanwhile, the Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse — located near the scene of the crash — announced that all Playhouse staff members and volunteers were safe.

“Moments like these remind us how precious each day is and how grateful we are for the safety and care of our community,” Playhouse officials wrote.
