‘All coming together:’ Orlando honors MLK’s legacy with march and vigil

ORLANDO, Fla. – Every year around this time, communities come together to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man whose commitment to nonviolence and equality helped shape the world we live in today.

This weekend, that remembrance continued in downtown Orlando with a vigil and a march celebrating his life and message.

This year’s events also marked a major milestone — the 40th anniversary of the Mayor’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission.

For four decades, the commission has worked to connect city leaders, businesses, faith leaders, and community members, all with the shared goal of carrying forward Dr. King’s vision of peace and unity.

David Kay, Board Chair of the Interfaith Council of Florida, says the event highlights the strength found in togetherness.

“We have an opportunity to see the rich diversity in our community, all coming together and standing together and fulfilling Dr. King’s vision,” Kay said.

After the march, participants gathered at First United Methodist Church for a service to continue honoring Dr. King’s legacy.

This is just one of many events happening across Central Florida, with more celebrations planned throughout the week and into next weekend. The city of Orlando will also host another parade Saturday at 10 a.m., marching from the courthouse to Lake Eola Park.
