ORLANDO, Fla. – The city of Orlando is moving forward with plans to create a permanent memorial at the Pulse nightclub site with removal of the existing building expected to begin in mid-March, officials announced Wednesday.
To prepare, construction fencing will be installed around the property on or near Monday. Once the fencing is up, the city said the temporary memorial will no longer be accessible.
The Pulse site marks the location of the June 12, 2016 mass shooting at the LGBTQ nightclub, where 49 people were killed and many injured. The permanent memorial aims to honor the victims and survivors.
During construction, a small area will remain open for visitors to leave perishable items like flowers.
City officials reaffirmed their dedication to keeping families and survivors informed every step of the way. A public meeting to share updates on the 30% design progress for the permanent memorial is set for March 5 at 4 p.m.
The meeting will be offered in a hybrid format, allowing participation both in person and online, with interpreters available. During the session, the design team will unveil new renderings that showcase the ongoing work of the Pulse Memorial Advisory Committee.
