Raging brush fire forces evacuations in Flagler County, officials say

Local officials said fire spanned roughly 100 acres

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – In response to a brush fire in Flagler County on Wednesday, local officials are urging residents to evacuate.

Flagler County Emergency Management issued a release on Wednesday night, recommending residents in the following areas evacuate:

  • Those between East Avenue and Bayberry Village Road
  • Those between Old Dixie Highway and Deer Hunter Road

The release states that a shelter is being opened at Fire Station 16, situated at 3935 Old Dixie Hwy. near the local Publix store.

Shortly before 9 p.m., the sheriff’s office also announced that the brush fire had caused Old Dixie Highway to shut down between Interstate 95 and U.S. Highway 1.

“Deputies are currently assisting with evacuations in the area of residences on both sides of Old Dixie Highway,” the sheriff’s office noted. “Affected residents should receive notice via Reverse 911.”

Earlier in the evening, Flagler County Fire Rescue reported that it were working with the Florida Forest Service to contain the roughly 80-acre brush fire.

Since then, the fire has grown to around 100 acres as of 5:30 p.m. Around that time, the fire was 40% contained.
