Raging brush fire forces evacuations in Flagler County

Fire spans roughly 170 acres, burns near homes and churches

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – Flagler County officials urged residents to evacuate due to a raging brush fire, but the request was lifted early Thursday.

The fire scorched an estimated 170 acres near South Old Dixie Highway, east of U.S. 1 near Bunnell.

Flagler County Emergency Management issued a news release Wednesday night, recommending evacuations in the following areas:

  • Those between East Avenue and Bayberry Village Road
  • Those between Old Dixie Highway and Deer Hunter Road

As of Thursday morning, the fire was 80% contained.

Earlier, the sheriff’s office said the brush fire had caused Old Dixie Highway to shut down between Interstate 95 and U.S. Highway 1.

“Deputies are currently assisting with evacuations in the area of residences on both sides of Old Dixie Highway,” the sheriff’s office noted. “Affected residents should receive notice via Reverse 911.”

A shelter was opened at Fire Station 16, situated at 3935 Old Dixie Hwy. near the local Publix grocery store.
