VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – On Wednesday afternoon, Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood took to social media to warn locals about a rumor of a gun-toting student.

In a release, Chitwood said that the rumor popped up during Tuesday’s school board meeting, where a citizen came to the podium and claimed that an elementary student had brought a gun to school.

“Before this false rumor grows legs, let me share the truth,” he wrote. “There have been ZERO guns reported or recovered on any of our school campuses.”

Chitwood clarified that a fourth-grade student had brought a neon-green toy gun to Pathways Elementary School back in November.

“While this may be a school disciplinary matter and a behavioral issue, it’s not the threat that was portrayed at the podium,” the sheriff added.

Chitwood went on to say that officials have added and are continuing to add more layers of protection to detect threats to public schools and keep students safe.

“False rumors don’t help, so I want you to have the facts instead,” he finished.
