BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A 74-year-old man died after someone ran over him over along the course of a half-marathon.
Police said it happened near US-1 and East Hibiscus Boulevard on Sunday, Feb. 8.
The Florida Marathon said someone drove into the lane for runners and hit Albert “A.J.” Swann.
The 74-year-old died eight days after being hit.
“That’s pretty tragic,” runner Jose Duarte told your Melbourne Community Correspondent James Sparvero.
James asked Melbourne police how could a driver cross over onto the closed side of the street.
Police answered that was still under investigation.
“I don’t know how that could happen,” Duarte said.
The driver has not been charged.
Runner Tariz Lart said you expect to feel safe when you run a marathon.
“You expect other people to just be cautious of their surroundings,” she said. “I’m hoping that nobody did that on purpose.”
Swann’s obituary reads the 74-year-old was running in his 31st half-marathon.
Sparvero made public records requests from police for any 911 calls from witnesses and any reports from police at the scene.
