BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A 58-year-old man was arrested on Thursday after the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office say he climbed into a parked ambulance while paramedics were treating a patient and attempted to move the vehicle because it was blocking his path.

Sheriff Wayne Ivey said on social media the incident happened when Brevard County Fire Rescue crews responded to a call on Sykes Creek. As paramedics worked in the back of the ambulance, they felt the vehicle begin to move. One crew member stepped out and found a man, later identified as Lane Fothergill, behind the wheel.

“Lane Fothergill yesterday, I guess was impatient, couldn’t wait,” Sheriff Ivey said.

According to Sheriff Ivey, Fothergill told responders he was wanted the ambulance moved so he could get through the driveway. When confronted, he jumped out of the rescue unit, got back into his own vehicle and struck a paramedic in the leg while fleeing.

“I’ll be honest with you, some things never cease to amaze me and this one is going to be the top of at least the week, maybe the month,” Ivey said.

Deputies were able to use a tag number provided by fire rescue to track Fothergill down. He was arrested and taken to the Brevard County jail.

He faces charges including grand theft of a motor vehicle and burglary of an occupied conveyance, the sheriff’s office said.
