APOPKA, Fla. – A 26-year-old former Apopka High School teacher is accused of sexual battery with a student, according to police.

Gadiel Rivera-Nieves was arrested on Tuesday after the Apopka Police Department received information about a “sexual relationship” that started in 2022 and lasted over a year with a 17-year-old student.

According to police, Rivera-Nieves was no longer employed by Orange County Public Schools when he was arrested, but he was employed as a teacher at an Orlando charter school.

Orange County Public Schools released the following statement regarding Rivera-Nieves’ arrest:

School administration was made aware of a former employee currently working at Mater Academy Charter School, who has been arrested. This individual has not been employed at Apopka High School since 2024. The District’s Office of Professional Standards has been notified and is assisting law enforcement as they conduct their investigation. Any additional questions would need to be directed to law enforcement as this is an ongoing investigation.

Rivera-Nieves faces a charge of sexual battery of a child between the ages of 12 and 18 by a person in custodial authority.
