Daytona Beach to vote on ‘toilet to tap’ water measure

Amendment to go to voters in November

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – City leaders unanimously voted Wednesday to let voters decide on whether to ban "Toilet to tap“, the practice of treating wastewater for use as drinking water.

City officials said there are no current plans to consider the idea, but a recent Florida law limiting the discharge of treated wastewater into rivers by 2032 is raising questions about what to do with it.

Some in the community are strongly against “toilet to tap.”

“It’s chemically treated sewage. Chemicals. Along with fecal matter,” said one person in a public comment a few weeks ago.

Another commented, “I certainly don’t want my children or grandchildren drinking treated sewage water. I think that’s awful.”

The amendment will go to voters in Daytona Beach in November, after the Volusia County Council rejected a similar charter amendment earlier this year.
