ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Leaders with Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) are gathering feedback on using artificial intelligence (AI) as the district works to develop a strategy for AI integration.
At a meeting on Tuesday, the school board will hold a work session to discuss the results of a community survey on the use of AI tools within the district.

The survey asked for the comfort level of parents for their child were to use AI tools, the importance of potential benefits, and questions about concerns surrounding AI.
School board member Alicia Farrant said significant guidelines are needed to balance innovation with safety and data privacy.
“We have to make sure we’re protecting the student’s identity,” Farrant said. “I want to make sure that when we’re using AI, it’s not taking harmful information on our students. We don’t want these AI tech companies storing data.”
In December, the school board received a strategic plan update from the district’s chief information officer on AI integration.
During the presentation, Maurice Draggon said OCPS currently uses AI in some capacities, but protections would be needed to uphold academic integrity.
“When parents hear AI, they think more technology,” Farrant said. “That’s the part we want to make sure that we’re protecting our students, because we’re wanting the highest level of achievement.”
Farrant said after learning the results of the survey, the district plans to develop an AI policy that will be in place by the fall.
“My goal would be to have that in place for the next school year, but also even to have some standards and guidelines for the finishing of this school year,” Farrant said.
Tuesday’s work session is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the OCPS administration building.
