ORLANDO, Fla. – A 17-year-old student was found armed with a gun at Dr. Phillips High School on Thursday, according to the Orlando Police Department.

In a release, police said they were notified about a student on campus with a firearm, which led them to Joshua Brown.

Upon locating Brown in his classroom, he tried to flee, though officers quickly intervened and manage to take him into custody, the release shows. A loaded 9mm handgun was discovered in his backpack.

Now, Brown has been arrested and faces charges of possessing a firearm on school property, possession of a firearm by a minor, and resisting arrest without violence.

“This is exactly how it’s supposed to work,” Police Chief Eric Smith said. “Our officers acted quickly on a tip from the community.”

Police said the investigation is still active, though to protect the case’s integrity, no additional information has been released at this time.
