New footage released after deputy shoots stabbing suspect in Leesburg

Suspect identified as Timotheus Reed, deputies said

LEESBURG, Fla. – After a suspect was shot and killed by a Lake County deputy over the weekend, newly released body-camera footage shows more of what happened.

Deputies said they were called early Sunday morning to the 2400 block of Montclair Road after a 911 caller reported that someone had been stabbed several times.

“Yes, he is bleeding he has been stabbed in the neck,” said the 911 caller.

Upon arrival, deputies were directed by bystanders to where the stabbing suspect — identified as Timotheus Reed — had run off to, according to the sheriff’s office.

A deputy soon found Reed and shot him during the encounter, deputies added. Reed was later taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators also noted that a knife was recovered nearby where the deputy encountered Reed.

On Monday, the sheriff’s office provided News 6 with body-camera footage showing the shooting’s aftermath, with first responders appearing to treat Reed at the scene.

The start of the video clearly shows what happened after a deputy shot Reed as he lays on the ground with a deputy tending to his stomach.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office tells News 6 an autopsy performed Monday showed Reed suffered a single gunshot to the left side of his abdomen.

The majority of this police body camera video and audio is redacted, making it unclear what exactly happened.

However you can hear Reed groaning in pain.

“Oh my god,” said Reed.

“Roll him back this way,” said the deputy.

News 6 Investigator Pavlina Osta spoke with a family friend who says Reed came into his home asking for help moments before he was shot.

“Whenever I came outside, there was nobody else here — just him and the cops. I never heard of him being violent like that,” said the friend, Timothy Babinec.

He says Reed did not deserve to die this way.

“I feel like the video footage should be released so we can see was he in the wrong — did he have any weapons on him and all that stuff. It’s very sad,” said Babinec.

The deputy who shot Reed has been placed on administrative leave pending an administrative review of the incident and an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

No additional information has been provided at this time.
