LAKE MARY, Fla. – As hurricane season is approaching, the City of Lake Mary may be rolling out a plan to move some power lines underground.

At a meeting on Thursday, commissioners will vote to approve a binding cost estimate with Duke Energy to convert powerlines along North Country Club Road between Lake Mary Boulevard and the Lake Mary Events Center.

Advantages of undergrounding powerlines include a reduction in wildfire risks, removal of visual clutter, and a reduction in power outages caused by trees or storms.

Kenny Armenta owns a home in a neighborhood with buried power lines and said the plan would benefit many people in the area.

“There are fewer things that can come down, or trees grow and get in the lines,” Armenta said. “We rarely have any kind of power outage, so I think that’s probably a good idea.”

The city has not released the estimated cost for the conversion.

Commissioners will vote to approve the estimate during a meeting at City Hall on Thursday at 7 p.m.
