‘It will turn into a swamp’: Lake Mary considers plan to clean up West Crystal Lake

Lakefront homeowners could be charged $675 per year

LAKE MARY, Fla. – The City of Lake Mary is working on a plan to clean up West Crystal Lake, and some homeowners are being asked to pay toward the cost.

On Thursday, commissioners will vote on an interlocal agreement with Seminole County to incorporate the body of water into its lake management program.

While all of the properties surrounding West Crystal Lake are within Lake Mary, the city manager said it would be inefficient and cost-ineffective for Lake Mary to undertake the cleanup process.

Carol Ann Dove owns a home on the water and said aquatic weeds have spread underneath the surface of the lake.

“It’ll be overrun with weeds. You know, all sorts of problems,” Dove said. “It will turn into a swamp, and there are enough of those around. We don’t want ours turning into one.”

Action from Seminole County’s lake management program may include sediment dredging, weed harvesting, artificial aeration, and aquatic herbicide treatments.

If approved, Lake Mary will pay $3,041 per year based on its ownership of the Lake Mary Events Center and Margaret Wesley Park.

The cost to each of the 49 property owners would be around $675 per year.

“I think it’s a bargain,” Dove said. “It’s just it’s a treasure, and we need to take care of it.”

Commissions will vote on a second reading of the ordinance during their regular meeting on Thursday at 7 p.m.
