‘Improved significantly’: Sinkhole in Maitland stabilized after shutting down Wymore Road

About 60,000 gallons of water pumped into the sinkhole

MAITLAND, Fla. – A sinkhole that opened up last week on North Wymore Road in Maitland appears to have stabilized, according to a spokesperson for Orange County Public Works.

“The hole is holding water as we were hoping that it would,” said Darrell Moody, the spokesperson for the entity.

Moody spoke to News 6 Tuesday afternoon, several days after the sinkhole first appeared, shutting down the road and snarling traffic.

On Monday, crews with Orange County Public Works pumped more than 20,000 gallons into the hole to determine whether the hole would retain water.

That test failed, but after two days and 60,000 gallons of water, Moody said the situation has stabilized.

“The rate at which it was draining mid-day versus this morning or all day yesterday has improved significantly,” he said.

Moody explained that geotechnical consultants have advised waiting until Thursday morning to ensure the situation remains stable, before crews begin excavation.

After the asphalt is removed, Moody explained, crews will backfill the hole with dirt, grout the hole, and secure the actual opening. He said that crews will have to take core samples before they can begin the resurfacing process.

For now, the road remains indefinitely closed.
