Mom, 8-year-old son struck in New Smyrna Beach hit-and-run, police say

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – A mother and her young son were seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash while trying to cross the street on Tuesday, according to the New Smyrna Beach Police Department.

In a release, police said the incident happened shortly before 8 p.m. at the intersection of North Riverside Drive and Washington Street.

Police explained that the duo had been crossing within a marked crosswalk when they were struck by a white sedan, though the driver ultimately fled the scene.

Both the mother and boy were taken to the hospital as trauma alerts, but police said they were later listed in stable condition.

Meanwhile, police said the driver — identified as 36-year-old Michael Perrelli of Edgewater — turned himself in shortly thereafter.

Perrelli now faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving injuries.
