‘It puts us at legal risk:’ Vanity Room owners discuss role they played in probe into unlicensed lip injector

The owners of the Vanity Room said they cooperated with authorities investigating a unlicensed injector who falsely claimed to have ties to their business

ORLANDO, Fla. – Dr. Luis Campis and Desi Campis try to steer clear of having anything to do with unlicensed lip injectors, so it is a bit ironic that they ended up involved in an investigation into one.

“It puts us at legal risk,” Desi Campis said. “It puts us at legal malpractice, as well, being associated with someone who’s not licensed.”

Owners of The Vanity Room, a popular medical spa in Orlando, Luis and Desi said they provided relevant records to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office earlier this year as deputies probed the practices of the woman operating an Instagram account called “The Filter Effect.”

That investigation resulted in the arrest this week of Jaqueline Padilla Requena, 25, who is accused of practicing medicine without a license.

An arrest affidavit for Requena showed the investigation culminated after an undercover investigator arranged an appointment for lip filler service at the Casselberry address where Requena was allegedly operating.

After the undercover investigator arrived and Requena agreed to perform the service, she was arrested, the affidavit said.

“I feel like justice has been served,” Desi said. “There are so many illegal injectors out there.”

Luis and Desi said they had heard of Requena but they became much more familiar with her after a client of hers came to The Vanity Room with a vascular occlusion, which is a partial or complete blockage of a blood vessel.

“She was having problems with pain, with tenderness, with bumps,” Luis recounted.

Those problems, they said, resulted in a botched job at the hands of Requena.

The Vanity Room was able to fix the immediate issue, but the problems did not stop there.

“(The patient) tells me (Requena) said that she knows you and that you could take care of my complications, that you actually wanted her to work for you,” Luis said. “Which could not be farthest away from the truth.”

Luis and Desi told News 6 they had no ties to Requena at any point.

“I have never met this person before and I would never ever condone illegal medicine,” Luis said.

They urged people who want lip filler services to do their due diligence and make sure they are going to people who are trained and authorized to perform these procedures.

“If you are going to see a real medical provider, that provider is not going to have a problem showing you his or her license, showing you the documentation stating that I am licensed to do this,” Luis said.
