Hazmat situation at home leads to arrest, discovery of hidden chemical lab, Port Orange police say

PORT ORANGE, Fla. – A hazmat situation ended with a man arrested and a hidden laboratory containing hazardous chemicals discovered inside a Port Orange home, police said.

Officers initially responded to a disturbance at 6292 Palm Vista St. on Sunday morning, where they arrested Owen Kelly, 30.

During the investigation, officers discovered a concealed lab with hazardous chemicals inside the home. The Special Investigations Unit collaborated with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office East Side Narcotics Task Force, the Volusia County Fire/Hazmat Team and the Drug Enforcement Administration to safely address the hazardous chemicals found at the scene, police said.

Kelly was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail following his arrest. He was charged with illegal touching or striking. As of Monday, no additional criminal charges had been filed in connection with the lab.
