DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy is under investigation after crashing his patrol vehicle into a retention pond, Sheriff Mike Chitwood said.
The deputy and his K-9 partner were both in the vehicle at the time of the crash near where International Speedway Boulevard and Interstate 95 converge. Preliminary investigation shows the deputy was traveling approximately 92 mph when he failed to negotiate an off-ramp, sending the vehicle into the retention pond, Chitwood said.

The deputy and the K9 were not injured, and the patrol car was totaled.
“From what the video looks like, he was driving like an idiot,” Chitwood said.
Chitwood said a traffic crash investigation and an internal investigation are both underway. He noted the outcome of those investigations will determine what disciplinary action, if any, follows.
The sheriff’s office said video of the damaged patrol vehicle would be made available. Dash cam footage of the crash is also expected to be released.
