OVIEDO, Fla. – The City of Oviedo is moving forward on a project to improve safety along Mitchell Hammock Road.
On Monday, the city council voted to approve a nearly $3.5 million bid for corridor safety improvements from just east of State Road 426 to South Lake Jessup Avenue.
The project follows a 2018 study that provided recommendations to improve the safety and access management along the corridor.
The recommendations included providing a raised median, adding a sidewalk along the north side of the roadway, and improving access management.
Mayor Megan Sladek said the proposed work is long overdue.
“Of all the places people get annoyed with traffic, Mitchell Hammock has got to be the number one chokepoint there,” Sladek said. “It’s the busiest spot in Oviedo.”
During the conceptual design process, the city worked with Metroplan Orlando to develop a Vision Zero Action plan that was approved by Oviedo in 2024.
The road was identified as an area where a disproportionate number of traffic deaths and serious injuries occur.
Specific improvements for the project include:
- Overall widening of West Mitchell Hammock Road approximately five (5) feet along the north side to accommodate a sixteen-foot (16 ft.) wide raised (sodded) median and an eight-foot (8 ft.) wide asphalt sidewalk
- Milling and resurfacing of the roadway (both sides);
- Drainage improvements including regrading of the on-site dry retention pond (swale), the addition of flume inlets, and the extension of the existing double seventy-two-inch (72”) reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) cross drain to the north;
- Minor utility work, including the relocation of a fire hydrant, access management improvements including median access;
- Signage and pavement improvements.
Funding for the plan includes approximately $2.3 million that will be paid for through the city’s third-generation sales tax and an additional $1.5 million that will be reimbursed from the State of Florida at the end of the project.
