MOUNT DORA, Fla. – The City of Mount Dora is set to give final approval on a plan that will change how drivers move through downtown.
On Tuesday, the city council will vote to authorize a contractor to complete the Downtown One-Way Street Conversion Project.
The plan, which was initially approved in 2025, calls for changes to three streets so emergency vehicles have more room to respond to parts of downtown.
“We were told by engineers that the streets are unsafe in their current condition, so we couldn’t allow that lack of safety to continue,” Mayor James Homich said.
The project includes one-way southbound conversion on Alexander Street between 5th Avenue and 4th Avenue, Tremain Street would become one-way northbound between 5th Avenue and 3rd Avenue, and Baker Street would be one-way southbound between 5th Avenue and 3rd Avenue.

Todd Abell owns a business in downtown and said the plans will be a benefit for the city.
“These type of streets, it’s hard to get two cars by. So, one way, that street’s good. Some of them would make sense to do that,” Abell said.
Street parking will be on one side of each of the streets with a total of 49 spaces preserved.
“Downtown Mount Dora, there’s not going to be a lot of parking, but they make it work,” Abell said.
Once work begins, construction on the project is expected to take about six weeks.
The city council will vote on the contract approval during a meeting on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
