The renewal covers 50 body-worn cameras, along with hardware, software, storage, and evidence management tools through fiscal year 2032.
The original contract was approved in 2022 and department officials have said the Axon system has become essential to daily police operations since its launch.
“The Winter Springs Police Department has been extremely pleased with the performance, reliability, and overall value of the Axon body-worn camera system,” according to the department’s renewal request. “The technology has become an integral part of our daily operations and provides our officers with a dependable tool for documentation, accountability, transparency, and evidence collection.”
Officials also cited the ease of use and staff familiarity as key factors in recommending the renewal, noting that continuity with the existing platform reduces the need for additional training.
“Our personnel are familiar with the equipment and associated technology, which minimizes the need for additional training and allows officers to remain focused on their primary responsibilities,” the department noted.
Beyond operational efficiency, department leaders emphasized the program’s broader public safety value.
“The body-worn camera system benefits both our officers and the community we serve,” officials wrote in the renewal recommendation. “It provides an objective record of interactions, enhances accountability, assists with investigations and prosecutions, and can help resolve complaints or questions regarding officer conduct.”
The renewal also maintains continuity of operations across the county, including with the State Attorney’s Office.
Staff has recommended the city commission approve the renewal and authorize the city manager and city attorney to prepare and execute all applicable contract documents.
Commissioners will vote on the contract renewal during a meeting on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
