MARION COUNTY, Fla. - A 37-year-old man from Dunnellon died Sunday in a violent car crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Richard Haynie Jr. was driving faster than the posted 45 mph speed limit when he “came upon a crest of a hill and became airborne,” according to a news release from the FHP.

When the wheels of his 2016 Chevrolet Corvette made contact with the road again, Haynie lost control of the car, and it veered right, troopers said.

The car skidded onto the north shoulder of Southwest Marine Boulevard, where the side of the vehicle then crashed into a large tree, splitting into two pieces, the release said.

Neighbors heard the crash, troopers said, but it wasn’t reported to the FHP until 10:54 a.m. It took place at 12:30 a.m. Marion County Fire Rescue pronounced Haynie dead at the scene.
