Father of 9 fatally shot on Father's Day, deputies say

Deputies: 39-year-old man shot at Orange County house party

ORLANDO, Fla. – Detectives were investigating Sunday morning after a father of nine was shot at his birthday party in Orange County, deputies said.

Deputies said the shooting took place at 3:11 a.m. after a fight broke out during the large party at a home on Pioneer Road.

"Bang, bang, bang, bang and then bang, bang, bang about five minutes later," neighbor Jason Hill said.

When deputies arrived at the home, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, according to the Sheriff's Office. The victim, Alexis Osmick, who had just turned 39 years old Saturday, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Hospital where he later died, authorities said.

"We tried to make him a birthday for him. There were some guys and they were fighting and he tried to stop the fight and one of them shot him in the heart," the victim's cousin, who did not want to be identified, said.

The victim's cousin told News 6 Osmick was from Haiti, and leaves behind a wife and nine children. He said he doesn't know who was fighting or why Osmick was shot.

"We don't know why it ended up to him. He's really a good guy," the victim's cousin said.

Neighbors told News 6 there are parties at this house every week.

"The community has come to them and asked them to lower down the music some nights," neighbor Nina Prentice said.

But neighbors said this is the first time one of the parties has turned into a crime scene.

"You hear gunshots around here sometimes, so I didn't think anything of it. But that's tragic," Hill said.

News 6 saw dozens of evidence markers outside the home and along the road. A car parked nearby was also hit by bullets.

Detectives said the person who shot Osmick is cooperating with the investigation and law enforcement officials aren't looking for anyone else in connection with the fatal shooting.

Osmick's family is trying to understand how a party that started as a celebration of his birth ended with his death.

"We don't know how this happened to him," his cousin said.
