LONGWOOD, Fla. – A pedestrian was hit and killed by a SunRail train Thursday afternoon, Longwood police said.
Police said a man was fatally struck at 2:56 p.m. by a northbound train approaching State Road 434.
All train activity was suspended while police investigated the crash, including trains from Longwood to DeBary and Longwood to Sand Lake Road.
The man's identity has not been released.
The crash marks the sixth fatal SunRail incident this year, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.
A 70-year-old bicyclist was killed Aug. 28 near Lake Mary while crossing the tracks.
State troopers said that in each of those crashes the victims should not have been on the tracks.
"All of them could have been avoided. Whether it was a pedestrian a bicyclist, whether it's another vehicle, 100 percent preventable," Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes said. "When the crossing arms go down, that is the absolute finite warning to tell you that it's not safe to go past that point because there is a train going and that train has the right of way, always, 100 percent of the time."
SunRail resumed full operations Tuesday after Hurricane Irma halted service last week.
