TAMPA, Fla. – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday held a roundtable discussion at a charter school in Tampa.
Joined at Hillsborough Academy of Math and Science by Florida Department of Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas and Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia, DeSantis kicked off the discussion with education as the topic after offering well wishes to the police officer who was shot elsewhere in the city earlier that day.
“One of the issues you’ve seen percolating around in probably the last couple of years, and this is an issue nationwide, was teacher vacancies particularly in public schools, and there was a lot of attention on Florida just because that’s what corporate media does,” DeSantis said. “I would talk to my guys, they’d be like, ‘Well, what where are we on this?’ And we were below the national average even then when they were trying to make an issue of it, but there was an issue nationwide. So, we went ahead and we did a series of initiatives to be able to channel some good people into positions that were needed in our school system and I’m pleased to announce that as a result of those efforts and as a result of Florida’s emphasis on education, we’ve now reduced teacher vacancies for the 2025-26 school year by another 17.7%.”
