Lake Howell student alleges rape at football camp, police say

Victim claims upperclassmen held him against his will, report says

DeLAND, Fla. – A Lake Howell High School student says he was held against his will and sexually battered while at a football camp being hosted at Stetson University, according to the DeLand Police Department.

The 14-year-old boy told his mother about the allegation involving upperclassmen. His mother then told another person, who called an abuse hotline to report it.

Police said they became aware of the allegation July 27, but it's unclear when the incident occurred.

The boy's mother is not cooperating, according to the report.

News 6 legal analyst Steven Kramer said that doesn't mean the case is closed.

"It is very difficult, and a lot of times when making the complaint you have to re-live the event," he said. "You got to be involved in the investigation and relive it over and over again. Of course, you're talking about a child."

DeLand police said no arrests have been made in the case, but they are investigating multiple people in connection with the allegation.

Don Mauldin, from The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, said the organization held a football camp at Stetson University in late July, and Lake Howell High School football players attended.

He said the high school students are housed on campus, but do not have any contact with the university students.

Mauldin said police have not contacted him about the allegation.

"This matter is under investigation and Fellowship of Christian Athletes is gathering facts. All affected by this situation remain in our heartfelt prayers. FCA continues to maintain high standards of morality and personal conduct for all of our student athletes, and volunteers. Due to the investigation and proceedings taking place, we are not able to make further comments," the FCA said in a statement.

Seminole County Public Schools communications officer Michael Lawrence said he was aware of "an ongoing investigation on an unconfirmed allegation." He said child protective services is investigating.

Another teenage boy who attended this year's camp, South Lake High School junior DJ Myers, has been recovering at Orlando Regional Medical Center for more than a week after an injury suffered during a tackle left him unable to walk.
