Grandson in custody after well-known boxing trainer found shot to death near Ocoee

Deputies investigate fatal shooting in Lake Florence subdivision

OCOEE, Fla. – The 31-year-old grandson of a man identified by family members as a well-known boxing trainer is in custody in connection with the fatal shooting of his grandfather.

A family member identified the victim in the Friday-morning shooting that took place near Ocoee as Lucius "Lou" Harris, 72, who owned a gym off Ivey Lane and worked with boxing greats Roy Jones Jr. and Antonio Tarver, among others.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said deputies received a 911 call around 7:10 a.m. and found a victim suffering from a gunshot wound in the Lake Florence subdivision.

Lucien Harris, identified by family members as the victim's grandson, was taken into custody Friday afternoon, deputies said.

News 6 was there as police investigators showed up near Harris’ boxing gym with guns drawn, searching for Lucien Harris. Harris’ family said they told detectives where he might be.

Family members told News 6 that Lucien Harris was the victim’s grandson and that he had been raised by his grandfather and lived at the home. They said he also had some mental issues.

"The problem was: He just kept getting jealous, and he was jealous of a lot of other fighters. He was jealous (of) me because I was a fighter myself," Steve Harris said.

The victim's son said Lou Harris was a grandfather with a big heart who would do anything for anyone.

"He was a good mentor to a lot of people. He took a lot of people off the streets and changed their life," Steve Harris said.

Family members are now raising money through an online fundraising site to keep Harris' memory alive. Click here for a link to that site.

The Sheriff's Office said charges against Lucien Harris are expected to be filed as the investigation is ongoing.
