Students injured in Highlands County school bus crash, troopers say

Semi-truck hit rear of bus, causing crash

HIGHLANDS COUNTY, Fla. – A school bus carrying 39 students was struck by a semi-truck Wednesday morning injuring several students, officials with the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened at U.S. Highway 27 and Lake Placid Drive at 7:48 a.m. when the semi-truck hit the back of the Highlands County school bus, troopers said.

Two students were seriously injured in the crash and flown to Tampa General. Three other students and the bus driver were taken to another area hospital with non-incapacitating injuries, according to the report.

A Faceobook post from the Highlands County Sheriff's Office said that the students' parents should meet at the Winn-Dixie parking lot on County Road 29.

"Please do not come to the accident scene," the post read. "Stay in the staging area with your child until cleared to leave by a deputy."

FHP is investigating the crash.
