Sumter student brought stolen semi-automatic gun to middle school, deputies say

Teen stole gun from home, found on campus with gun in waistband, deputies say

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – A Sumter County middle school student has been arrested after deputies say he brought a stolen semi-automatic handgun to school on Wednesday.

Matthew Stanley, 14, has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm on school property, carrying a concealed weapon and larceny/grand theft of a firearm.

Sumter County deputies say they were first called to a home on the 2900 block of North C-470 in Lake Panasoffkee after a Kel-Tec 9mm semi-automatic handgun was stolen.

Deputies said Stanley, a South Sumter Middle School student, was named as a possible suspect and the school resource officer was notified.

According to the report, deputies searched Stanley on campus and found the stolen gun in his waistband.

Stanley was handcuffed immediately and brought to Sumter County Sheriff's Office, where deputies said he told them he stole the handgun to try and sell it.

Stanley was turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
