Teen arrested on birthday in fatal shooting at Lux nightclub in Orlando

Daeshawn Simmons arrested on charge of first-degree murder with a firearm

ORLANDO, Fla. – A teen was arrested on allegations of shooting and killing another teenager outside an Orlando nightclub.

Daeshawn Simmons, who turned 17 on Friday, was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder with a firearm in the death of 17-year-old Terron McCarty, who was shot in late March outside the Lux Ultra Lounge on International Drive.

Police said a second person, identified as 18-year-old Levar Ferguson, was also arrested in the case.

Ferguson was charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder and was booked into jail Friday.

Orlando police investigators said they found McCarty shot in the back of the head and the leg in the parking lot of the club. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told police the shooting started from a fight inside the club, which was hosting an event called "Spring Break Teen Bash" for 14- to 18-year-olds.

"We did have extra duty officers working that night. There were three of them. They were focused on the rear parking lot where many of our issues at that club happened. So, the investigation is still continuing," Orlando police Chief John Mina said in March.

Mina said police have been called to the club previously.

"That club has had its issues in the past. It's not the first time there's been violence there. We'll be sending officers out there to take a look at what the club owners can do to enhance their security," Mina said.
