Pickup truck partially sinks in washed-out roadway

APOPKA, Fla. – A truck driver crashed into a fire hydrant Monday in Apopka, sending water into a home and flooding a closet, officials said.

The hydrant was knocked over on Yvonne Street, causing the street to flood and opening a hole in the roadway.

Neighbors said the driver pulled into a driveway after hitting the hydrant, got out and inspected the damage.  The truck doors locked, however, so the driver kicked out the back window to get back into the truck, neighbors said.  They added that the driver tried to leave the area but drove into the hole.

Water ran into a home and several inches flooded a closet.  The homeowner is hopeful that the truck driver's insurance will cover the damage.

Orange County officials said the hole should be filled and patched by the end of Tuesday.

A boil water notice was not issued because water kept flowing out of the hydrant, officials said.
