Hey there Insiders! It’s meteorologist Samara Cokinos here to have a chat about lightning. I know, I know, I just wrote a bunch of articles about this very topic, but this one is different. Not to mention more and more people are outside enjoying summer events and holidays like Independence Day. So let me ask you, have you ever wondered what really sparks a lightning bolt or what the difference is between a positive or negative strike?

The first month of the hurricane season is done... what’s next?

June started out nearly silent. The Eastern Pacific was cooking and CONTINUES to cook! We’ve now achieved two major hurricanes in the Pacific basin. The Atlantic has started to come to life over the last two weeks, with two named storms having developed and a third, if not a FOURTH, on the way over the next week and some change.

The National Hurricane Center has an area of interest bull’s-eyed over the Atlantic with chances slowly creeping in the upward direction. This turns into our next tropical system. Recon aircraft are making their plans now to head into this potential invest over the next two or so days.

Grassroots gardening and high-tech tracking help Monarch butterflies 🦋

Hey guys, it’s meteorologist Julie Broughton. My dog, Jake, and I had a pretty exciting development this morning. As we were coming home from our walk, we spotted not one, but TWO monarch butterflies enjoying a mini-butterfly garden we recently planted. This is my first foray into being a plant mom.

I was inspired to create this one-pot wonder after working on a story about the declining monarch population. Turns out, we can all help save this beautiful species.
