What’s going on, guys?! Meteorologist Jonathan Kegges back with you for another edition of Tropics Watch!
August begins the Cabo Verde season, the portion of the hurricane season where tropical waves rolling off Africa climatologically become more numerous and have a better chance of developing.

For those that don’t know the Cabo Verde islands lie just west of Africa.
Saharan dust typically loosens its grip in this region and water temperatures continue to warm.
Over the last few days there has been two subtle signals on the ensembles. The European Artificial Intelligence ensemble has been the most bullish.
This ensemble has done fairly well this season.
The Google DeepMind, while more subtle, does show two distinct areas. We are looking at the grouping of lines and Ls.
Each different L represents an individual ensemble member forecast with the line being its track.
The chance for either one of these areas to develop seems low at this point. If the one off of Africa does it will be met with wind shear, especially in the Caribbean.
The red on the map above is the insanely strong wind shear ripping through the Caribbean ready to tear up any storm that thinks about heading in that direction.
We can thank El Niño for that.
The one in the subtropics may have a slightly better chance to develop as wind shear is lower.
All signs continue to point to a quiet season even as we head toward the peak next month.
Still, always have to watch in case one comes in our direction. Looking good for now though!
