What’s going on, guys?! Meteorologist Jonathan Kegges back with you for another edition of Tropics Watch!
The tropical Atlantic popped over the weekend. Well, sort of. The National Hurricane Center highlighted three areas of interest across the Atlantic Basin, but largely the bark is way worse than its bite. Let me explain.

We talked in last week’s edition of the newsletter that model guidance was hinting at possible development by the middle of August.
We also talked about that wind shear across parts of the basin was basically off the charts.
The leading tropical wave, east of the Caribbean is acting as a sacrificial lamb for the trailing wave closer to Africa.
It’s helping to moisten up the atmosphere making the environment a bit more favorable for development.
As this tropical wave moves into the Caribbean it will be torn to shreds by wind shear driven by El Nino.
While development is looking more probable for the wave closer to Africa, this one will try and curve northeast prior to the Caribbean islands.
Wind shear is also elevated in this area, but Bermuda will have to keep a closer eye on it beyond the weekend.
The next named storm is Cristobal.
These tropical waves rolling off Africa are being fueled by something known as a Kelvin wave. These are areas of low-level wind convergence that move across the globe promoting rising air and thunderstorms. These can aid in the formation of tropical waves in the Atlantic.
Once this Kelvin wave passes I am fully expecting the Atlantic to go back into its slumber.
The one in the North Atlantic by the way may have a short window for development, but it’s moving away from the U.S.
