Man accused of purposely running over, killing dog in Volusia County

Robert Kayat, 29, arrested on felony charges

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – A man is accused of intentionally running over and killing a family's dog in Volusia County, according to authorities.

Robert Kayat, 29, was arrested on felony animal cruelty charges. He was released from jail after posting bond.

Volusia Coutny sheriff's deputies said an investigation began Thursday when the family posted video from a neighbor's camera that showed a pickup truck swerving and hitting their dog on Treadway Road in New Smyrna Beach.

According to the arrest report, the owners of the dog were told by their neighbor their dog was dead on the side of the road. The neighbors gave the owners the raw video surveillance that captured the incident, deputies said.

"You can see it clearly in the video that he was ran over on purpose," the dog's owner said in a 911 call. "Anybody that watched the video would tell you that it was done on purpose."

Deputies viewed the video and said in it Kayat's truck "abruptly swerves wide away from the dog then sharply towards it," according to the report. "The dog was startled causing it to run into the roadway. As the dog ran into the roadway it was ran over."

The video also shows Kayat stopping, getting out and walking over to the collapsed animal where he "nudges the dog once with his boot then kicks the dog more forcefully the second time."

The video was posted on social media and has gone viral.

According to deputies, Kayat said he was trying to scare the dog and didn't mean to run it over.
