Tropical development possible in the Gulf by this weekend. Here’s what to know

Next named storm is Bertha

ORLANDO, Fla. – While the tropics remain calm for the majority of the week, we could be tracking some tropical development in the Gulf into the weekend and early next week.

Tropical Development Chances

Latest EURO tropical model continues to pick up weak signals that an area of low pressure may try to form along a stalled front in the Gulf between around the weekend (July18/19th).

AREA TO WATCH IN THE GULF

At this point, not all forecast models show development, but there is enough agreement to keep a close eye on the area over the next few days.

The National Hurricane Center has not yet highlighted this zone for development, but that could change if forecast confidence increases.

LATEST TROPICAL OUTLOOK

If a tropical storm were to form, the next name on the Atlantic list would be Bertha.

Conditions in the northeastern Gulf are a bit of a mixed bag. While ocean temperatures remain warmer than average to help fuel development, there is also plenty of Saharan dust to keep the development limited.

It remains far too early to know whether a system will develop, how strong it could become, or where it might track.
