New study offers solutions to downtown Maitland’s traffic problem

Leaders will discuss Monday night

MAITLAND, Fla. – After years of studies, there may finally be a path forward to ease traffic and mobility issues in downtown Maitland — an area drivers and pedestrians say feels chaotic and even dangerous.

Downtown Maitland has become a major congestion point, especially during rush hour — with safety concerns for drivers, cyclists and people on foot.

“It gets very hectic… packed up, especially during rush hour.”— Daniel Perez, Downtown Maitland resident

A new multimodal transportation study (cars, bikes, pedestrians) highlights problem areas and crash history.

Crash data shows that from 2018 to 2022, Maitland Avenue (Orlando Avenue to Sandspur) recorded 138 crashes, including one fatal crash.

The report recommends multiple changes, including intersection reconstruction

“I see accidents all the time,” said Perez.

A key concern: crossing George Avenue at Maitland Avenue.

The report proposed constructing a crosswalk.

“Would you feel comfortable crossing Maitland Avenue without a crosswalk?” asked News 6’s Amy Russo.

“Unfortunately, I do it. But no, you’re always making sure that you’re not getting run over,” replied Perez.

Another hotspot: Packwood Avenue at Orlando Avenue / US 17-92.

The report suggests creating one lane each for right, left and through traffic.

City leaders are expected to discuss the study on Monday. The report contains additional recommendations for downtown Maitland.
