Orlando Magic chief executive officer Alex Martins is stepping down and taking a new role with the NBA team after 14 years in the position, according to the team.
According to a news release, the Magic will not hire a new CEO but will instead have team president of business operations Charlie Freeman lead the business efforts for the franchise while Jeff Weltman, president of Basketball Operations, will continue to oversee all basketball-related efforts and report directly to the Magic Board of Directors.

Martins will be named vice chair, a newly-created role in which he will act as a senior advisor to the team’s board of directors “to advance long-term strategic initiatives and serve as a resource to Magic executives,” the release states.
“We thank Alex for his exemplary service to the Magic organization as CEO,” Orlando Magic Chairman Dan DeVos said in a statement. “Since joining the team in 1989, Alex’s commitment to excellence has distinguished him as an extraordinary leader in our organization and the Orlando community. When Alex communicated his intention to retire several years ago, our family decided to create a new role leveraging his experience. We are pleased he has agreed to continue our partnership and congratulate him on his new role as Vice Chair.”
